One of the four major funerary monuments in the Kidron valley, the `Tomb of Zachariah’ stands at the entrance to a multi-chambered catacomb of the second half of the second century B.C. It combines Egyptian and Greek architectural elements with its pyramidal roof and Ionic columns. A Hebrew inscription on the architrave identifies it as the property of a priestly family, the Bene Hezir. It also has architectural affinities with some of the tombs at Petra.
