John Owen and Emanuel Bowen, were two 18th century map makers, most renowned for their ‘Britannia Depicta’.

Published by Thomas Bowles in several editions between 1720 and 1764.

‘Depicta’ was an atlas specially designed for the early 18th century traveller being of a size to fit in a coat pocket or saddle-bag. It contained strip road maps based on an earlier survey of English roads by John Ogilby, plus a series of county maps of England and Wales. This series is often referred to as the Owen/Bowen maps.

This example is one of the county maps from the 1720 edition, and is highly embellished and with extra text describing market towns or other places of note.

It has been hand coloured.
